Nourished by the ancient pottery tradition of Avanos, Bei Kaya Art House is a studio that carries this rich heritage forward through a contemporary artistic lens.
The studio's roots begin with traditional Avanos pottery master Mustafa Güleç, and this legacy of mastery evolved into a true artistic identity with his son, Erdoğan Güleç. Having met the potter's wheel at the age of seven, Erdoğan spent years perfecting the craft passed down from his father. While he deeply explored traditional forms, he chose not to limit his production to mere repetition.
A pivotal moment in his career was his introduction to Master Necati Ayden, a protégé of the Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu studio. Erdoğan Güleç shared a workshop with him for nine years—a period he cites as the most formative of his artistic life. This profound influence allowed him to translate traditional pottery into an entirely original artistic language.
He went on to teach vocational courses for European Union projects and traveled to Japan to research soil analysis and advanced glazing techniques. By reimagining classical clay forms, he produced highly distinctive works, embracing a philosophy that seeks to develop tradition rather than simply protect it. Today, Bei Kaya Art House stands as a dynamic, living production space built upon this vast accumulation of experience.
The journey continues with Erdoğan Güleç’s daughter, Gamze Güleç. After earning her Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctorate-equivalent Proficiency in Art from Hacettepe University’s Sculpture Department, she merged her academic background with the studio's deep-seated traditions. Today, she creates across the disciplines of ceramics, sculpture, and painting.
From pure craftsmanship to contemporary fine art, Bei Kaya Art House embodies a powerful creative lineage. It is a place where the experience of the past meets the art of today, guiding tradition into the future.
Working with the earth, touching it, and experiencing it brings a person peace. As a descendant of the Hittites, I wanted to make the clay speak, so I spoke in the language of the earth... Erdoğan Güleç
